Spiceball Park in Banbury was transformed into an American battlefield 29 years ago to showcase the American Civil War.
As reported in the Banbury Guardian on July 11 1985, the Banbury Round Cross Table picked an American theme and the day started at 11am when a parade of Confederate and Union troops made their way through the streets of Banbury to publicise the event.
At noon, displays and other activities started before the showpiece of the afternoon.
The crackle of the musket, the smell of cordite, the muffled roar of cannon and the earth-shattering explosions all lent reality to the spectacle watched by a crowd of more than 1,000 people.
Lt-Col Donald Westbrook from the USAF base at Upper Heyford was on hand to take the salute from the Southern Skirmish Association.
