In the Banbury Guardian on May 16, 1985, Hanwell’s veteran bell-ringer George Sturch, who was 76, was presented with a set of hand-bells in St Peter’s Church to mark 65 years’ ringing in the village.

They were handed over by churchwarden Winifred Adkins on behalf of the parishioners and the parochial church council.

George started as a bell ringer when he was 11-years-old under the guidance of his father, a leading member of the village band.

“My dad rang the bells for the church, along with two other ringers,” he recalled.

“He started me with one bell, same as the others. Dad had two. Pretty soon the others left and I had to ring two while Dad had three.”
