Students at the North Oxon Technical College were praised by Banbury police for their behaviour during Rag Week in 1974 they raised £500 to help mentally handicapped children.
The Banbury Guardian reported on the event on April 12, 1974, and said the students’ union adviser Leslie Coombes said students had ignored publicity stunts except for the pram race, and had devoted all their efforts to raising money, which will go towards providing a workshop at Solden House School.
Supt Graham Owen of Banbury Police said Rag Week and especially Saturday’s procession, had gone very smoothly. He said: “We have been very critical of students in the past and how they have conducted themselves during Rag Week. But this year we received no complaints at all.”
