Pirate captain comes a-calling

Well shiver me timbers! Little landlubbers at Grange County Primary School were visited by pirate captain Rocky Cliff as part of their new topic '“ Ship Ahoy!

They learned all about life aboard a pirate vessel which Captain Rocky told them would include scrubbing the decks, reading treasure maps and possibly even walking the plank.

His guidance obviously paid off because the little learners – who designed and wore their own pirate costumes – managed to find the hidden loot on their treasure hunt.

Their response to the topic has been outstanding, as deputy head Mrs Jude Barratt acknowledged.

She said: “It’s so important for children to be enthused by their education. They’ve learned key skills about co-operation and team work through hands-on experience.

“We’ve already started making pirate flags using a range of art techniques.”
