CHEF Danny McGeehan cooks up a feast and shows that The Saye and Sele Arms is so much more than just an ordinary village pub.

Danny and his wife Liz, who took over the pub in 2005, have made it their mission to – on top of consistency and excellent service – arrange different events to make the Broughton pub just that bit more exciting.

That the building is part of the historic Broughton Castle estate, built in the 1300s and the ancestral home of Lord and Lady Saye and Sele, certainly adds to the idyllic ambience of the rural setting.

Earlier this month the couple invited Banbury Guardian’s Hanna Ljunggren and Martin Elvery to a lavish food and wine evening. On the menu were no less than six different courses with a different wine accompanying each course.

We happily munched through everything from smoked duck breast with a beetroot crostini to pork fillets with a walnut cream cheese filling – all nicely wrapped up in parma ham.

We also thoroughly enjoyed the grand finale comprising a white and dark Belgian chocolate twist served up with fresh raspberries and crème fraîche.

The icing on the cake was indeed the wine, carefully selected to work well with each course and accompanied with a small introduction and a crash course in wine tasting by a representative from Majestic Wines.

And it is with these events and that extra attention to detail The Saye and Sele sets itself apart from other village pubs. And it seems that the locals have cottoned on as the pub was filled to the brim with guests – all enjoying the food and wine and a friendly chat with Danny, Liz and the staff. Next on the agenda for the busy chef is a starters and puds evening which will be held tomorrow (Friday).

Danny, who used to have a business manufacturing fresh desserts commercially, will be in his element as he will be showcasing 25 different hot and cold starters followed by a range of his homemade desserts. “The starters will make up the main course as everyone can have as much as they like and when everyone’s done we’ll be bringing out the homemade desserts when, again, everyone can have what they want and as much as they want for a set price of £19.75.”

Us here at The Banbury Guardian are certainly going to queue up to once again get a taste of Danny’s cooking and Liz’s and the staff’s hospitality.
