The next Special Guest Night at Banbury Folk Club on Wednesday, November 20 features Paul Downes, who has the reputation of being one of the greatest acoustic guitarists in the world.

It is easy to see why when you witness the dazzling array of styles he performs with effortless brilliance, but at the same time he considers himself a singer of songs, rather than a guitar technician.

Paul has a rich musical background that has progressed through working with Phil Beer from Show of Hands, The Arizona Smoke Revue, Pete Seeger, The Joyce Gang, and Maggie Boyle. Paul was last at the club with Mick Ryan in September 2010.

He has appeared with Mick in several Folk Operas most recently The Paupers’ Path about life in a Victorian workhouse.

Supporting Paul is the delightful Peter Ball (Palmerston, The Linda Watkins Band). Peter, as well as being a superb musician, is a teller of tales and poet. Add to this a few musical twists and his subtle sense of humour and he is guaranteed to do a great support set.

Tickets, priced at £8/£7 concessions, are available on the door. The club meets every Wednesday in The Millers Bar at 8.30pm at The Mill Arts Centre.
