Colin Aries, 49, of no fixed abode, has been charged with three counts of arson and one count of aggravated arson following last Thursday’s attack on three ATMs in Banbury and a freemasons hall.

The spate took place between 2am and 2.30am and ATMs belonging to Santander, Lloyds Bank and Yorkshire Bank in the High Street were all severely damaged as was the wooden door of the Freemasons Hall in Marlborough Road.

The aggravated arson charge relates to the fire started at the Freemasons Hall which is regarded as arson with intent/recklessness to endanger life because of the likelihood of people being in the building at the time.

Aries was arrested in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday) and attended Banbury Magistrates’ Court about 11am.

He will remain in custody until he is due to appear at Oxford Crown Court on Friday, June 20.
