The cries of Oyez! Oyez! will echo louder than ever through Banbury this year as the town plays host to the Loyal Company of Town Criers’ British Championship.

For the first time in its history, Banbury will be the setting for the most prestigious event in the town criers calendar on the weekend of September 5-7, with 25 town criers and their escorts travelling from across the country to compete for the 2014/15 title.

Anthony Church, Banbury town crier and host, said: “I am very proud Banbury was successful in hosting this championship. It will also mark the tenth anniversary of Banbury’s town crier championship.

“I am looking forward to hosting this event and to welcoming the contestants to the historic town of Banbury, a town I am proud to serve as town crier.”

The weekend will start with the Banbury Mayor’s Charity Quiz on the Friday evening and then on Saturday morning the criers and escorts will parade from the Whately Hall Hotel in Horse Fair through the town to the bandstand in High Street for the start of the championship. It will be a two-round event starting at 11am with the town criers extolling the virtues of their hometown/city.

At 2pm they will cry on a subject chosen by the host.

Competitors can choose from the history of the Banbury Cake, Banbury in 1914 and the history of Banbury Cross. Mr Church said: “This championship could not happen without sponsorship and there is still time for sponsors to come on board and have their businesses promoted in a unique and traditional way.”
