The village of Byfield is getting ready for its annual fete which will have a World Cup theme.

Visitors to the event, which takes place on Saturday, will notice a hint of Brazilian carnival echoing this month’s World Cup fever in South America.

At the forefront will be a penalty shoot-out nail biter, with visitors taking shots at the Byfield Tigers goalkeepers throughout the afternoon. The final will be held in the fete arena with prizes including a trophy for the winner.

Children will be able to get artistic with a football shirt designing competition and there will be flower arrangements and hats on a Rio carnival theme in the exhibition tent.

Fete committee member Joanne Wood said: “It doesn’t matter whether you are obsessed with football or loathe the game; the inspiration for our artistic competitions this year can be either sporting or cultural.”

All the traditional attractions will be laid on – from craft stalls to dancing displays, welly wanging, a fun dog show, a barbecue, bar and cakes – at Church End House, Church Street, from noon to 4pm.

The fete will be opened by Northamptonshire Cricket Club mascot Steeler. Entry is £1 for adults, 50p for children and a £3 family ticket for two adults and up to four children.

The event is organised by Holy Cross Church Action Project and Byfield School PTA.
