WARMINGTON resident Norman Painting - the voice of Philip Archer in the Archers - has died today (Thursday) at the age of 85.
The actor played the Ambridge farmer since the show's first trial run in 1950.
He also wrote more than 1,000 scripts for the show.
Painting is featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest-serving actor in a single soap opera.
The Banbury Guardian's Warmington correspondent Liz Newman said Mr Painting lived in the village since the 1960s and had also played the organ at St Michael's Church in the village.
She said: "He was known to everyone in the village but in recent months had been pretty housebound.
"I last saw him 18 months ago."
"We would call him when he said he had items for a coffee morning or something."
Painting's autobiography, Reluctant Archer, was published in 1982.
