CASH from the sale of a forgotten painting has boosted the funds of a charity shop.
A postcard-sized oil painting of a ewe and lamb by Victorian artist Friedrich Wilhelm Keyl was discovered among a bag of items donated to the Cancer Research shop in Parsons Street, Banbury.
It was identified by auctioneer James Lees of Holloways during one of his regular visits to the store to look for items of value.
"This painting is so small it could have easily been missed," said Mr Lees.
"It is a good example of the artist's work. He is known for his animal paintings and was a particular favourite of Queen Victoria. In fact, the Royal Collection includes seven pictures by Keyl – one of which is a study of lambs in Home Park at Windsor, which was given to the Queen as a birthday gift in 1868."
The painting was expected to raise between £100 and £150 but sold for £350 at auction.
