Spiceball all set for popular run
Running enthusiasts young and old still have time to take part in one of Banbury’s popular community events at the weekend.
The Banbury Run brings everyone together at Spiceball Park on Sunday, with a 15-mile race, two-mile fun run and one-mile race for children under-14 all starting from 10.30am.
Geoff Smith, organiser, said: “We are a bit down in numbers across the board for those running the event this year, but people can still come along on the day and sign up for the 15-mile, two mile or one-mile fun run! It is such a rewarding thing to do – and one of the great things organising it over the years is an 81-year-old man from Birmingham who has run in the two-mile race for the past five years!.”
The event, which has been running for nearly 20 years, has been a good warm up for those looking to take part in the London Marathon in April, and the 15-mile rural route leads runners through Little Bourton and as far as Chipping Warden before coming back to the park.
The Paul Bithell Memorial Fun Run, named in memory of the former Banbury Guardian editor, sees racers travel through parts of Grimsbury before finishing back in Spiceball.
Runners can gather from 9am, with the 15-mile run starting at 10.30am. The two-mile race starts at 10.40am with the one-mile race at 11.10am.
Mr Smith said: “We have got a lot of regular runners that always come back, and it is always nice to get lots of emails and letters from those who have run in the race for the first time. We hope more people will take part on Sunday, it is a really good event and gets everyone involved.”
