Children made a stand for their right to have fun when they took part in the first ever national Playday, it was reported in the Banbury Guardian on August 13, 1998.

Youngsters piled into the Banbury Family Centre at St Joseph’s Church in Edmunds Road for the fun-filled holiday event which was one of a series of events organised by the Children’s Society to encourage safe opportunities for play for all.

A spokesperson said: “Many children are denied the right to play because of poverty, poor planning, environmental dangers and lack of space.” Working with the Children’s Play Council, the society was issued a charter targeting councils, schools, parents and the government in order to improve provision.
