‘Wettest year for a decade hits farms’ could easily be a headline from this week’s Banbury Guardian –instead it was featured in the paper 20 years ago, on January 13, 1994.

Pictured left is a Twyford field during the first week of 1994 after the river Cherwell burst its banks and rushed out onto surrounding farmland. Homes in the Banbury area largely escaped flooding but farmers bore the brunt of the downpour and Alasdair Lowe, farm manager for K.J. Cherry at Twyford, estimated that 150 acres, or 25 per cent, of his land was under water.

According to Banbury School weather station three quarters of the monthly rainfall average fell in the first week of January. Students measured a rainfall of 45.4mm until January 7 with the average monthly figure at 60mm.
