THE Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Trust (ORH) and its partners have lost their bid to become an Academic Health Science Centre – a move designed to help bring new treatments directly and more quickly to patients.
The trust, in collaboration with Oxford's universities and Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust heard last week that the Department of Health had chosen other partnerships instead.

ORH spokesman Helen Peggs said the status would have allowed technology to be used at the Horton Hospital with diagnosis by experts in Oxford, as well as enhanced training of health professionals in Banbury.

However, Horton campaigner Dr Peter Fisher said the move would have made the county's hospital services even more Oxford-centric and saw no reason why the perceived benefits for Banbury could not be achieved without the status.
