Here’s a tip for bargain hunters

Crockery, collectibles and kitchen equipment will be among items on sale at a new re-use shop being trialled at the Alkerton recycling centre.

Visitors are being encouraged to donate unwanted goods in decent condition.

Items will be priced up and sold on-site. If the reuse areas are successful, the council will look at introducing them at other recycling centres across the county.

The trial will be run by the council’s contractor Weymouth and Sherborne Recycling (W+S) and is planned to last at least six months.

Any income generated through sales will be kept by W+S but should the council adopt the scheme following the trial, it would look to use the income to offset some of the costs of running waste management services.

Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Growth and Infrastructure Hilary Hibbert-Biles said: “Oxfordshire is currently the best county council in England for recycling and composting, and we want to continue to improve, helping residents to produce less waste and recycling as much as they can.

“This is a really exciting trial which has the potential to add a valuable new service to our recycling centres. Many of the items people bring to the centres are in very good condition and could easily be reused by someone else. With people coming and going all the time, the centres can potentially provide the perfect environment for a reuse area to thrive.

“With on-going national pressure on public finances, all councils are having to come up with new ideas to generate income, and if the trial is successful, we will consider using reuse areas to help fund owaste management services – as well as providing a new opportunity for visitors to pick up a bargain.”
