A YEAR of celebrations to mark the 400th anniversary of Banbury's Royal Charter has got under way.
The Charter was granted by James I in 1608 and gave Banbury the right to have a mayor and a town clerk, effectively the beginnings of democracy.

To mark the occasion, events will take place throughout 2008, beginning with an official launch at Banbury Town Hall today (Friday, February 8).

Following that, traditional annual events such as the Hobby Horse Festival and Canal Day will be joined on the charter calendar by unique celebrations, culminating in a Jacobean market and skating rink in mid-December.

Banburians can also brush with history throughout the year when the original 400 year-old charter document goes on display at Banbury Museum after the launch.
